The Community and Our Programs

This is an exciting time for Cloverdale’s Historical Society. We are fortunate to have a historic home and museum, a history center, and a patio garden with seating.

These comprise a beautiful complex that allows us to offer events, exhibits, research, and outdoor activities suited for all ages.

We often partner with the Cloverdale Center for the Performing Arts, located next door, for the Speaker Series and programs such as the Forthright and Female Lecture Series

Cemetery Restoration
The Historical Society has since the late 1980s been the driving force behind the restoration and maintenance of the historic Riverside Cemetery. There has been an outpouring of support from the Cloverdale community to protect this treasure. In 2014 a successful fund raising effort culminated in retaining wall restoration and more projects are on the horizon. Continuing the popular Cemetery Tours is a priority and we plan a tour each year around Halloween.

We hope you can see the vision and mission of the Cloverdale Historical Society reflected in the types of projects we do and that we have underway. We have a wonderful Board of Directors and volunteers who give generously of their time and talent to make this happen.

The Beverley McChesney Historical Essay Contest

HISTORYMAKERPROJECT

The Historical Essay Contest, a new and innovative program of the Cloverdale Historical Society, was founded by Beverley McChesney in 2013 for public and private school fourth and eighth graders. Each year since, Beverley worked closely with the CUSD Superintendent, local principals and teachers to prepare the subject matter in conjunction with school curriculum. Utilizing the Historical Society archives that she helped create, Beverley researched and distributed materials to Jefferson, Washington, Seventh-Day Adventist and interested home schoolers describing the lives of Cloverdale area role models. “The program gives students an opportunity to learn about diverse figures and to write about one of their choice,” she said when the program was first launched.

When choosing figures to include, attention is given to historical period, ethnic diversity, and topics of potential interest to each age group. A blue-ribbon committee of judges is selected from the committee and the cash awards for each prize are determined.

Subjects have included, for the fourth grade: Ann Amaroli Gillis, Gloria Figueroa, Ida Hoadley Humbert, Carmen Ruiz, Miguel Sanchez, John Santana, Daniel Sink and for the eighth grade: Anthony Cuneo, Dena Gambetta, Edna Cobb Gorden, Everett Lampson, William Russell Ledford, Jane Leist, Joseph Lile, Lucile McKay Kelly, Enrico Prati and Ulises Valdez.

Beverley passed away in late 2014 but she had a vision for the contest that we intend to keep. She felt that future topics could include transportation, the Geysers, and the early fruit and wine industry. She wanted to encourage anyone who had materials on the Pomo who lived in this area or a body of information on early Mexican settlers to contact the Historical Society and submit their materials for our research archives to be used for the contest.

She also wanted to expand the program to the high school level.

If you would like to donate in Beverley’s honor, you can do so here.
